Friday 18th December 1900

Today I had to open the Lung. Lord Frobisher-Pilbeam was failing and I was required to deliver a shot directly to the heart. I believe that, as invasive as such treatment is, I can extend his lordship’s life for at least another month with these new drugs and inter-vascular injections, giving me a little more time to perfect the machinery that keeps him alive.

I am given hope by the medicines that the Apothecary has delivered – while they are undoubtedly frowned upon by The Society for Scientific Advancement, I know that they are producing near-miraculous results.

His Lordship, however, was wracked with pain throughout the entire process; forcing me to administer even more laudanum than normally advisable. In line with his Lordship’s orders, I am required to record his words without judgement, however I must remind myself that the ramblings of the Laudanum soaked mind are rarely lucid:

“My darling, my darling, my, where are you, my darling? When we first met I was tall and strong and my darling- (Here, his lordship became indistinct.) The strange lights are here again like visitors from the Empire or lights within the house it is cold. The strange man is here again, again, again and demands we made were made- (Indistinct again, but then, clearly and loudly:) Salvation Is Coming. (Here, I think His Lordship is speaking of the seditious posters that have been plastered around the servant’s quarters, though how he has seen them, I cannot know.) Salvation is coming, coming, coming. The Alchemist is here. (Here a long pause, then-) Yes. (Pause.) Yes, I am sure….I accept.”

At this point, His Lordship trailed off and finally slept.

  1. Herr Doktor:

Are the Society aware that you are being so openly candid about your work?

If you won't pay heed to the views of the Society for Scientific Advancement, then at least pay some attention to patient confidentiality and all that, old boy, eh?

    Yours Sincerely, etc, etc,

  2. Patient confidentiality? I am an alchemist of high repute. You will see evidence of my research on New Year's Eve. I shall show the world that I Doktor Von Science have unlocked the door to having a long life. It may not be eternal youth, but it is close.

My patient has given me permission to use him as a guinea pig, and will be by my side when I make my discovery public.

I implore you to come and see for your self. All sceptics will be silenced by my research.
